A walking tour of Lucerne, Switzerland

Lucerne or Luzern (Swiss Standard German) is a city in central Switzerland, in the German-speaking portion of the country. Lucerne is the capital of the canton of Lucerne. It is the most populous city in Central Switzerland, and a nexus of economics, transportation, culture, and media in the region.

Owing to its location on the shores of Lake Lucerne and its outflow, the river Reuss, within sight of the mounts Pilatus in the Swiss Alps, Lucerne has long been a destination for tourists. From here, Zurich is under an hour drive west; the historic locations near lake Constance like St. Gallen and Appenzell are an hour drive northeast; the ski resorts of Graubunden like Davos are under 2 hours drive east and the tourist destinations of Bernese Overland Alps like Interlaken and Jangfrau region starts from couple of hours drive south.

One of the city’s landmarks is the Chapel Bridge (German: Kapellbrücke), a wooden bridge first erected in the 14th century. Many historic attractions are spread around the Chapel Bridge, and the restaurants by the river next to the bridge are very popular with tourists for a lunch while enjoying the scenery and people watching.

Another interesting location is near the FC Luzern Futbol (Soccer in American terms) club. There are motorsport and car show events almost every season near this area with car enthusiasts from all over northern Switzerland, Western Bavaria and Austria in attendance!
