Fairytale Village of Appenzell, Switzerland

Appenzell is a village in northeastern Switzerland and capital of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. The village has been found in historical records since 11th century and has been under the Abbey of Saint Gall in nearby St. Gallen since 1223 A.D. The buildings in the village core, the parish church, the 1563 town hall, the Salesis house, the ruins of Castle Clanx and the state archives with the administration building are listed as heritage sites of national significance.

Appenzell, along with Saint Gallen is part of popular Swiss tourist sites south of Lake Constance. The town is especially notable for it’s fairytale like appearance in the houses, churches, old castles and parks in the central part of the village. The pictures below were taken during our walking tour of Appenzell after parking at a scenic location.
