Cruising the Western Mediterranean

Embarking on a journey aboard the majestic Harmony of the Seas, Royal Caribbean, we set sail from Barcelona into the heart of the Western Mediterranean. This cruise was not just any voyage; it marked a triumphant return to the seas after the world paused during the Covid-19 global pandemic. Ours was only the second cruise of the ship after restriction were lifted in Europe in Fall of 2021, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and our enduring love for exploration.

Palma De Mallorca: An Island Gem

Our first port of call was the enchanting island of Palma De Mallorca. Stepping onto this island felt like walking into a postcard, with its azure waters kissing the sun-kissed shores, creating a symphony of natural beauty. The highlight, undoubtedly, was the Gothic masterpiece that is the Palma Cathedral. Towering over the city, it stood as a beacon of architectural grandeur with the backdrop of the blue Mediterranean sea.

As we ventured further, the island unfurled its panoramic vistas, where the rugged coastline met the serene horizon, painting a picture so perfect, it etched itself in our memories forever.

A Serendipitous Day at Sea

Destined for Marseilles, fate had other plans, keeping us adrift on the cerulean waters. While the whispers of adventure in Marseilles went unanswered, the Mediterranean cradled us in its embrace, offering a day of unexpected tranquility. This interlude at sea became a canvas for reflection, underlining the voyage’s essence – the journey itself is the destination.

La Spezia: A Gateway to Wonders

La Spezia served as a portal to the revered sites of Cinque Terre, Pisa, and Florence. Having explored those nearby destinations, we decided to take a rest day while Glenda enjoyed some luxurious treatment as the Spa and Rashid explored the many decks of the ship. La Spezia, with its bustling harbors and verdant hills, whispered promises of adventures for those setting foot on its land, but for us, it was a serene pause, a moment to breathe in the Mediterranean air.

Civitavecchia to Rome: A Brush with History

Civitavecchia’s shores beckoned us towards Rome, the eternal city. Amidst the grandeur and history of Rome, our excursion was a testament to the saying, “So much to see, so little time.” The Eternal City, a tapestry of history, art, and culture, awaited us with open arms, each corner steeped in stories that span centuries. Yet, as we ventured through its historic heart, I found myself caught in a whirlwind of sights and sounds, a rapid march through time that left little room for the pause and reflection I cherish.

Our guide, a wellspring of knowledge, led us on a brisk journey through Rome’s iconic landmarks. The Trevi Fountain, a masterpiece of baroque art, was our first stop. There, amidst the cascading waters and intricate sculptures, I yearned for just a few more moments to absorb its beauty, to let the sound of falling water and the sight of stone carved to perfection wash over me. But the hands of the clock were unyielding, and we pressed on.

The Vatican City, a sovereign splendor, beckoned next. Standing in the heart of Catholicism, surrounded by its spiritual and architectural magnificence, I felt a deep desire to linger, to let the aura of sanctity and artistry envelop me. Yet, again, time was a luxury we couldn’t afford. Our fleeting moments there felt like mere glimpses through a moving window, each second slipping away before I could truly grasp the depth of what lay before me.

The Colosseum, a colossal testament to Rome’s imperial past, was perhaps where my heart felt the heaviest. This ancient arena, echoing with the echoes of history, demanded more than a passing glance. I longed to touch its weathered stones, to stand in silence and let centuries of stories seep into my soul. But our schedule dictated otherwise, and we planned right then and there to come back for a detail tour at some point in the future.

A cruise is a mosaic of experiences, a delicate balance between exploring the breadth of destinations and the constraints of time at sea. Each excursion is a dance with time, a race to capture the essence of a place before the ship calls us back. In this dance, compromises are inevitable, and while our heart may yearn for more, we understand the intricate ballet of cruise logistics.

Naples: Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast

Our voyage then steered us towards Naples, a city cradling history and nature. Pompeii, the city frozen in time, was a poignant reminder of nature’s might and the fragility of civilization. Walking through its streets was like stepping back in millennia, each corner telling a story, each ruin whispering secrets of the past. The Amalfi Coast was a stark contrast, with its vibrant hues and the sheer joy of life. Amalfi, a jewel in its crown, was a cascade of colors, flavors, and aromas, a feast for the senses. This first taste of the Amalfi Coast was intoxicating, igniting a desire to return, to immerse in its beauty and serenity.

Barcelona: The Journey Comes Full Circle

As our cruise neared its end, a day at sea offered a moment of repose, a gentle conclusion to a journey of discovery. Returning to Barcelona, we carried with us not just memories, but experiences that we will cherish for long time. It was no surprise that the following year we did return back to the Amalfi Coast to explore more, and that was all thanks to this wonderful cruise and excursions.
