Exploring Murano on the way to Venice

Murano is a series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon, northeast Italy. It is world famous for its glass making industry since the late 13th century. This gem of island is easy to explore and with a population around 5000, it’s much less crowded than Venice. In this blog, we will describe time-convenient way to explore Murano for first time on your way to Venice.

The Venice Airport is located on mainland near the city of Mestre, which is part of the greater Venice Metropolitan area. While the main mode of transportation to Venice from Mestre is via rail and road over the Liberty bridge, a more scenic route is from the Airport via waterbus or water taxi. The Alilaguna waterbus service departs from the lower level of the airport and the ticket counters are available right at departure point. You can purchase a ticket for Airport-to-Murano and then another for Murano-to-Venice. You can also buy roundtrip if you’re planning to return back to the Airport or mainland the same day, but this require precise time management because there is a lot to see!

Once you reach Murano, explore the island by walking and using a map navigation app like Google Maps. The glass factory museums are very popular. It is also a nice experience to take a stroll through the streets and stop at a cafe or restaurant to taste the local cuisine. You can navigate the main areas by foot this way in 3-4 hours before heading to the Alilaguna dock that departs for Venice.

If you are planning to buy the ticket for Murano-Venice in person in the island, keep in mind there are fewer locations than in mainland, but some stores also sell these tickets. Just make sure to purchase the ticket by early afternoon because some shops may close as early as 4pm or 5pm during off season.

One of the best time to board the Waterbus to Venice is about 20-30 mins before sunset. This allows you to enjoy both Murano from the distance and the world famous Venice grand canal as it approaches. Be ready to take pictures and videos and enjoy the sights and sounds!
