A day trip to Lucerne – ideas for your travel plan

After a fantastic stay in Bad Gastein, Austria, my husband and I found ourselves with some time to spare while based in Zurich. Naturally, we decided on a road trip to the charming city of Lucerne! While our son, Zak, enjoyed some downtime at the hotel, we ventured out to experience this quintessential Swiss destination.

A Classic Car Surprise

While most of the central parking garages in Lucerne were full, we scored unexpected parking near the city’s soccer stadium. Little did we know, a delightful surprise awaited! A classic car show was in full swing in the parking area, and as enthusiasts, we were absolutely thrilled. Row upon row of gleaming vintage vehicles captured our attention and admiration.

A Scenic Stroll to the Chapel Bridge

After soaking in the classic car spectacle (and it being a free parking day!), an easy 20-30 minute walk took us to the heart of Lucerne. Our destination: the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), a wooden masterpiece spanning the Reuss River. Dating back to the 14th century, this covered bridge is adorned with beautiful paintings depicting Lucerne’s rich history. Strolling across it felt like stepping back in time!

The bridge led us to the other side of the river, where we immersed ourselves in Lucerne’s picturesque streets and lively atmosphere. We explored shops and cafes, admiring the architecture and simply soaking in the beauty of this lakeside city.

A Refreshing Reward

Our exploration led us to a delightful spot where we treated ourselves to a refreshing meal. Surrounded by the buzz of the city yet feeling worlds away from the crowds around the main tourist attractions, it was the perfect way to recharge for our journey back to Zurich.

Tips for Your Lucerne Adventure

  • Parking Possibilities: If central garages are full, consider seeking out parking further afield like we did. Explore areas around the stadium – you might even stumble upon a pleasant surprise!
  • The Chapel Bridge’s Past: Research the bridge’s history before your visit. Knowing about the fires it has survived and the significance of its artwork will add depth to your experience.
  • Venture Beyond the Crowds: While the Chapel Bridge is a must-see, don’t hesitate to explore the quieter side streets and alleys for a different perspective of Lucerne.
