While staying in the picturesque German village of Oberstaufen, we couldn’t resist a day trip to the legendary Swiss village of Appenzell. Eager to experience its storybook charm, we set off early one morning for a scenic drive.
The Journey to a Swiss Wonderland
The drive from Oberstaufen to Appenzell is about an hour and a half, winding through rolling hills and lush valleys. As we crossed the border into Switzerland, the landscape subtly shifted, hinting at the breathtaking beauty that lay ahead.

Stepping into a Fairy Tale
Upon arriving in Appenzell, we were immediately transported to a world of storybook charm. The car-free village center bustled with life, surrounded by vibrantly painted wooden houses adorned with intricate frescoes. Every corner was a picture-perfect scene. We strolled leisurely through the streets, soaking in the delightful atmosphere of this traditional Swiss town.

With our stomachs rumbling, it was time for the quintessential Swiss experience: fondue! We found a cozy restaurant and indulged in a pot of perfectly melted cheese, savoring each dip of crusty bread.
Tip: Be sure to have some cash on hand for your meal here. Some restaurants may accept euros but will give your change in Swiss francs.

Exploring a Historic Church
After lunch, we felt the pull of history and made our way to the town’s beautiful church. Its ornate interior was filled with rich colors and details. Stepping inside felt like stepping back through time, adding another layer to our already memorable day.
A Day to Remember
As the sun began its descent, we reluctantly started our journey back to Oberstaufen. Appenzell had captured our hearts with its enchanting atmosphere, delicious food, and glimpses into Swiss tradition. The echoes of its cowbells and the visions of its brightly painted homes would be a cherished memory of our European travels.
