In June 2023, my family and I embarked on an ambitious two-week adventure to explore the breathtaking beauty of Switzerland. Accompanied by our youngest son, Zak, we sought to delve deeper into the heart of the Swiss Alps. Our first week was spent in Badgastein, Austria, nestled in the stunning High Tauern Mountains – a place that truly captured my heart. For the second week, we made Zurich our base and set off to discover the enchanting Jungfrau Region.

Our journey began in Grindelwald, where we ascended the legendary Eiger. The Eiger, along with the neighboring peaks of Jungfrau and Monch, forms a majestic trio that dominates the skyline. These three peaks are shrouded in myth and legend, with tales of brave climbers and their daring exploits. The Eiger, in particular, is notorious for its challenging North Face, which has earned it the nickname “Mordwand,” or “Murder Wall.”

From Grindelwald, we ventured to the charming town of Lauterbrunnen, nestled in a valley adorned with 72 cascading waterfalls. Though we didn’t have the opportunity to visit the picturesque towns above it, such as Mürren and Gimmelwald, we vowed to return in the future.
Today, I’d like to share our experience in Interlaken, a captivating town situated between two beautiful lakes – Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The name “Interlaken” translates to “between lakes,” which perfectly encapsulates its unique location.
Interlaken’s history dates back to the 12th century when it was founded by Augustinian monks. The town’s popularity as a tourist destination began to grow in the early 19th century, as European nobility and artists flocked to the region, inspired by the Romantic movement’s celebration of nature and its awe-inspiring landscapes.

In recent years, Interlaken has gained even more fame through social media and its appearance in various films, such as the Bollywood blockbuster “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” and the Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” This newfound popularity has brought both benefits and challenges to the town.
As we explored Interlaken, we couldn’t help but notice the abundance of tourists, especially during peak season. While the town’s popularity is a testament to its beauty and allure, it also raises concerns about overcrowding and the potential exploitation of its resources.

To help preserve Interlaken’s charm and reduce the impact of overtourism, consider visiting during the off-season or shoulder season, when the crowds are smaller, and the town is more serene. Additionally, opt for eco-friendly activities and support local businesses to contribute positively to the community.
Driving through the Jungfrau Region is an excellent way to experience its beauty at your own pace. While the region boasts an efficient public transportation system, having a car allowed us the freedom to explore and create unforgettable memories as a family.
Interlaken, with its rich history and stunning landscapes, is undoubtedly a must-visit destination for any traveler seeking the quintessential Swiss experience. By being mindful of our impact and making conscious choices, we can help ensure that this enchanting town remains a treasure for generations to come.
So there you have it – our Interlaken adventure! I hope you enjoyed joining us on this virtual journey and feel inspired to embark on your own Swiss escapade. Until next time, happy travels!
