Las Vegas, Nevada, USA – First Look

Las Vegas (often just called “Vegas”) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Nevada and second largest in the Southwestern United States. The city bills itself as the Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its luxurious and extremely large casino-hotels. With over 2.9 million visitors as of 2019, Las Vegas is the sixth-most visited city in the U.S, a top-three destination for business conventions and a global leader in the hospitality industry, claiming more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world.

The Las Vegas Strip is about 4.2 mi (6.8 km) long stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard in Clark County, Nevada, that is known for many of the largest hotel, casino, and resort properties in the world and their contemporary architecture, lights, and wide variety of attractions. Its hotels, casinos, restaurants, residential high-rises, entertainment offerings, and skyline have established the Strip as one of the most popular and iconic tourist destinations in the world and is one of the driving forces for Las Vegas’s economy. The most famous resorts & casinos on the Strip include MGM Grand Las Vegas, New York-New York, The Venetian Las Vegas, Caesars Palace, Horseshoe Las Vegas & Paris Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood and Bellagio.

One of the advantage of the close proximity of hotels, resorts, entertainments and convention centers on the Strip is that most of the attractions are within easy walking distance. We stayed at the Hilton Elara Grand vacation club which had direct access from Planet Hollywood. The Sphere, though couple of miles outside the strip, is connected to the Venetian providing walking access back to downtown Las Vegas. Additionally, the Vegas monorail transit system allows easy access to attractions around town.

Some prominent national parks and popular attractions are short drive from downtown Las Vegas. Heading East, visitors can access Hoover Dam, Lake Meade national recreation area and the Mojave Desert within 20-45 mins drive. Heading West, the Red Rock national park offers one of the most scenic drive in western U.S. just 30 mins away.
