Stelvio Pass, Top of Italy

The Stelvio Pass is a mountain pass in northern Italy bordering Switzerland at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 ft) above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps, 7 m (23 ft) below France’s Col de l’Iseran which has an elevation of 2,764 m (9,068 ft). The pass is famous for its winding path and hairpin turns that is popular with motorists.

The Stelvio Pass is an important track for sport when it is open from May through November. Countless cyclists and motorcyclists struggle to get to the highest stretch of road in the Eastern Alps. It is the highest finish of any Grand Tour. The popular British motor show “Top Gear” named the drive from Davos, Switzerland to Stelvio, Italy crossing Fluela Pass and Stelvio Pass as world’s best drive in 2010. The pass is generally considered one of the top driving experience among mountain passes in the world.

Stelvio pass is connected to Umbrail Pass, highest road of Switzerland. It can be accessed from Davos, Switzerland from the west via Fluela Pass; Tyrol, Austria from north via Reschen Pass; Tirano, Italy from southwest via Bernina Pass; and from Merano, Italy from the east.

At the highest point of the pass there are tourist facilities, restaurants and shops including the highest charging station in the Alps for EVs.

Driving down the pass southwest bound offers some great stopping area for photo opportunities. The hundreds of hairpin turns offer a thrill ride for motorists.
