We wanted to visit both Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen on the same day because it was our first time exploring these beautiful places. Ultimately, we plan to return and spend more days in each of these stunning locations in the years to come.
We were staying in Zurich for 5 days, following a week-long stay in Bad Gastein, Austria. From Zurich, we decided to visit Interlaken in the morning. The drive from Zurich to Interlaken took about one and a half hours, and from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, it was approximately a 20-minute drive, depending on traffic conditions.

Lauterbrunnen: A Picturesque Swiss Gem
Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Lauterbrunnen is a breathtaking village known for its stunning natural beauty. The name “Lauterbrunnen” translates to “many fountains,” which is fitting given the 72 waterfalls that cascade down the surrounding cliffs, including the famous Staubbach Falls, one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe.

The village’s history dates back to the 13th century when it was first mentioned in official documents. Throughout the centuries, Lauterbrunnen has maintained its traditional charm, with its picturesque wooden chalets and lush green landscapes.

Villages we missed
Due to our limited time in Lauterbrunnen, we, unfortunately, didn’t have the opportunity to visit the famous picturesque villages located above the valley. These include Wengen, a car-free village known for its stunning views of the Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch peaks; Mürren, another car-free village with breathtaking vistas and hiking trails; and Gimmelwald, a tiny, idyllic hamlet nestled on a mountainside. These villages are definitely on our list for our next visit, as they offer a chance to experience the tranquility and beauty of the Swiss Alps away from the crowds.

Our brief visit to Lauterbrunnen left us longing to return and spend more time in this enchanting village. The awe-inspiring waterfalls, majestic mountains, and charming atmosphere make Lauterbrunnen a true gem in the Swiss Alps. We look forward to our next visit, when we can dedicate more days to exploring this beautiful region, including the picturesque villages we missed, and immersing ourselves in its natural splendor.
