Our journey to this ancient city began after a delightful detour to Trieste during the vibrant Barcolana celebrations, an annual sailing regatta that brings the city to life with energy and festivity. After soaking in the festive atmosphere and indulging in a delicious late lunch, we set our sights on Pula, driven by the allure of its historic heart—the Roman Amphitheater.
Pula’s Roman Amphitheater
As we arrived in Pula, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow that seemed to highlight the grandeur of the city’s Roman Amphitheater. Although it was closed, the sight of its massive, well-preserved stone arches against the backdrop of a sinking sun was a spectacle in itself. Known locally as the Arena, this amphitheater is among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world. Built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, who also commissioned Rome’s Colosseum, Pula’s Arena has stood the test of time, preserving a history that spans millennia.
The Pula Arena was primarily used for gladiator fights in front of as many as 20,000 spectators, a testament to its grand scale and the importance of such events in Roman public life. Today, it serves a new purpose, hosting a variety of cultural events, including film festivals and concerts, bringing a modern twist to its ancient stones.

The best time to explore Pula and its historical marvels is between late spring and early autumn, from May through September. During these months, the weather in Pula is at its most pleasant, offering warm days and cool evenings, perfect for wandering through its ancient streets or enjoying the many outdoor cafes. Summer brings the city to life with numerous festivals and events, making it a vibrant time to visit, though those preferring a quieter trip might enjoy the slightly off-peak months of May or September.

With hearts full of sunset memories and minds buzzing with historical intrigue, we continued our journey to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Arriving at night, we were filled with anticipation for the next morning’s adventure to the magical Lake Bled, promising yet another chapter of breathtaking views and enriching experiences.
