Bavaria, the largest state in Germany, is also the most visited due to its many tourist attractions from Alpine peaks to picturesque villages and famous castles. One day trip idea is to have a driving tour from Munich, the largest city in the region and an international hub for train and airline connection. In this trip we will visit Zugspitze – Germany’s highest peak, the scenic Bavarian town of Mittenwald famous for its church and violin factory and the village of Oberammergau famous for its passion plays.


The drive from Munich to Zugspitze is just over an hour. At above 10,000 ft. elevation, Zugspitze, bordering Austria, is the highest peak of Germany. A fast cable car takes visitors from the base by scenic lake Eibsee to the peak in a comfortable ride offering great views of the surrounding villages. Visitors can even cross into Austria and enjoy delicious meal with a surrounding view of the snowy mountain!



From Zugspitze, the scenic town of Mittenwald is little over 30 mins drive. The town is famous for its Catholic Church of Peter and Paul. It also is home to historic violin manufacturer.
We enjoyed some Bavarian delicacies like cheesecake and strudel on the way to our next stop, the village of Oberammergau.



The drive to Oberammergau through fairytale like Bavarian countryside was very enjoyable. The village is famous for its passion plays, originating many centuries ago, and now held every decade as part of a large regional festival.



The drive back to Munich was under an hour and we thoroughly enjoyed the Bavarian charm in its villages, towns and mountains all in just a day trip! Enjoy the video below for a passenger side view of our road trip from Oberammergau to Mittenwald!
