Lake Constance is the second largest lake in the Alps with scenic shoreline across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. One of the popular activities on the lake is taking boat or ferry tour with stops at various lakeside cities and villages. In this blog we will summarize our personal experience with Lake Constance Ferry Tours.

The 3 major ports on the lake are Friedrichshafen and Konstanz in Germany and Bregenz in Austria. For our trip, we drove to Friedrichshafen where we purchased the ferry tickets next to the famous Zeppelin Museum. There are multiple routes offered on the ferry service, some allowing point-to-point, some offering round-trip passing by multiple ports and so on.

One popular roundtrip route goes through Friedrichshafen, Immenstaad, Hagnau, Meersburg, Mainau, Konstanz. The scenic trip takes passengers northward stopping at scenic towns of Immenstaad and Hagnau before reaching picturesque Meersberg where the wide mouth of the lake ends.

The ferry then turns to the western shore to the island of Mainau and finally reaching the city of Konstanz. On the trip we frequently encountered Zeppelin airships flying overhead on tours from Friedrichshafen and Konstanz.

Other popular stops from Friedrichshafen include Langenargen, Wasserburg, and Lindau in Germany, Rorschach in Switzerland and Bregenz in Austria. Lindau, especially, is famous for its historic watch tower and Lion statue.

Also near the lake, on the westside shores of Switzerland, lies the historic city of St. Gallen with its medieval era UNESCO heritage sites of the Chapel and Library.

Nearby Appenzell is a fairytale like village with historic church. We enjoyed some Swiss fondue at lunch in this charming location.
