Whale Watching in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas, also known simply as Cabo, is a resort city at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Rated as one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations, Cabo San Lucas is known for its beaches, scuba diving locations, Balnearios, the sea arch El Arco de Cabo San Lucas, and marine life.

In the winter, pods of whales can be observed in the area. They bear their calves in the warm waters of the Gulf of California after traveling up to 10,000 kilometers (6,000 mi) from Alaska and Siberia. A popular excursion in Cabo San Lucas is whale watching via guided tours, especially between the months of December and March due to increased marine animal activity.

The whale excursions typically depart from the port of Cabo San Lucas on hourly intervals with groups of visitors and one or more tour guides. Smaller tour groups on smaller boats are better suited for observing whales in close proximity. If the water is calm enough, the guide may be able to use aquatic audio devices to make calls to the whales. Visitors can then listen to response calls from one or more whales.

Along with whale watching excursions, Cabos is famous for beaches, surfing, and sport fishing opportunities. It is a popular port of call for cruise ships on the pacific route from California traveling the ‘Mexican Riviera’ locations like Ensenada, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan. Many popular resort chains have establishment in the area and 80% of U.S. citizens in the state reside around Cabo San Lucas.
