Day Trip Plans – Madrid, Spain

Madrid is the capital and most populous city in Spain (around 7 million population in the metro area by 2023 estimate). With direct flights from most major cities in Europe and east coast of USA, Madrid is one of the ideal entry point to your European Vacation. The city is also well connected by long distance trains and highways to other parts of Spain and Portugal as well as France. In this blog we highlight a day trip plan around Madrid for travelers on a few hours layover or using the city as a gateway to other destinations.

The city center of Madrid showcases historic architectures dating back to 16th century and beyond. The historic center, known as ‘Plaza Mayor’, is a must stop on your visit. There are also accommodations around the plaza for overnight stay. This location is also starting point for many Hop-on-hop-off Bus tours around Madrid or major public transports.

The Hop-on-hop-off tours are a convenient way to travel around the city. You can get off at a point of attraction and get back on another bus on the same route at a later time. We took advantage of this to visit several attractions over a few hours. We recommend below attractions on your day trip itenerary.

  • Museo Nacional del Prado
  • Plaza Mayor – City Center of Madrid
  • Royal Palace of Madrid
  • Santiago Bernabeu Stadium (Home of Real Madrid FC)
  • Gran Via – Iconic triangle of Madrid’s most historic buildings
  • Mercado de San Miguel – Popular Market and Eateries
