Lugano is a city in southern Switzerland’s Italian-speaking Ticino region. The city stands on the northern shore of Lake Lugano, surrounded by mountains. Lake Lugano borders the popular Lake Como on the Italian side, and the close proximity of the 2 beautiful lakes make the area an attractive and busy tourist hotspot.

Lugano’s Swiss-Mediterranean mix of cultures is closely related to that of Italy’s northern Lombardy region. This mix is reflected in its architecture and cuisine. Its main square, Piazza della Riforma, is ringed with pastel-colored, neoclassical palazzi.

Lugano is well connected via highway southbound from central Switzerland city of Lucerne or westbound from Italian side in Como. It also sits on the Gotthard Railway line through the famous Gotthard Pass in the Swiss Alps.

Described as a market town since 984, Lugano was the object of continuous disputes between the sovereigns of Como and Milan until it became part of the Old Swiss Confederation in 1513. In 1803, the political municipality of Lugano was created, following the establishment of the canton.
