Assisi is a historic town in the Umbria region of central Italy notable for the UNESCO heritage site and church of St. Francis of Assisi. The scenic town is well connected via highways and major train routes from Rome, Bologna or Florence.

One popular road trip idea is to take a day trip to Assisi while based in Rome. This plan works even better when staying a short distance north of metropolitan Rome due to congested city center. For example, if you fly into Rome and stay at one of the smaller towns in northern Lazio within 20-30 km north of the city; then a trip to Assisi becomes a smooth scenic drive under 2 hours.

The trip route takes the scenic hill region of Northern Lazio, crosses into Umbria and heads to Assisi near Perugia. Total trip time is littel over 1.5 hours

UNESCO collectively designated the Franciscan structures of Assisi as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Among these the most visited churches are The Franciscan monastery, il Sacro Convento, the lower and upper church of St Francis, Basilica of St. Claire and Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. Next to the church is a beautiful garden with free access for visitors that offers a scenic view of the town and nearby hills.

The historic sites in Assisi are well organized near parking lots for both buses and cars as well as clearly marked walking routes with amenities like restrooms, eateries and shops along the way. When in Rome, we highly recommend taking a day trip to Assisi!
