South Australia is a state located in the southern central part of Australia. It is bordered by Western Australia to the west, the Northern Territory to the north, Queensland to the northeast, New South Wales to the east, Victoria to the southeast, and the Great Australian Bight and the Indian Ocean to the south. 

The state covers a total area of 984,377 square kilometers (380,070 square miles) and has a population of around 1.7 million people. The major regions of South Australia include Adelaide and the surrounding Adelaide Hills, the Eyre Peninsula, the Flinders Ranges, the Riverland, the Limestone Coast, and the Murraylands. 

These regions are known for their diverse landscapes, ranging from rugged mountain ranges and deserts to coastal beaches and wine-growing regions. Each region has its own unique attractions and offers visitors a wide range of outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and culinary delights to enjoy.

Adelaide

From Sydney, we took a flight to Adelaide where my husband’s cousin lives. Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia, located in the southern central part of Australia. It is the fifth-largest city in the country, with a population of over 1.3 million people in the greater metropolitan area. Adelaide is known for its relaxed lifestyle, beautiful parklands, stunning beaches, and rich cultural heritage. 

The city has a vibrant arts scene, with numerous festivals and events held throughout the year, including the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Adelaide Festival of Arts. The city is also home to a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops, offering visitors a diverse culinary and shopping experience. 

Adelaide is surrounded by world-renowned wine regions, such as the Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills, which offer visitors the opportunity to taste some of Australia’s best wines. It is a charming and vibrant city, offering visitors a unique blend of cosmopolitan culture and relaxed Australian charm.

Strathalbyn

He lives in Strathalbyn, a historic town located in the Adelaide Hills. The town is known for its beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture, including many original stone buildings and Victorian-era homes. It is also home to a number of antique shops and boutiques, which draw visitors from all over the region. The town’s main street, High Street, is lined with historic buildings, cafes, and shops, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Strathalbyn is surrounded by picturesque farmland, rolling hills, and scenic drives, providing ample opportunities for outdoor activities and sightseeing. It is a delightful town that offers visitors a glimpse into South Australia’s rich history and countryside charm.

Goolwa

Goolwa is a historic river port town located in South Australia, situated at the mouth of the Murray River on Lake Alexandrina. The town has a rich history dating back to the 1800s, when it served as a major hub for river trade and transport. 

Today, Goolwa is a popular tourist destination, known for its charming historic buildings, scenic riverfront, and picturesque beaches. Visitors can take a ride on the historic steam train, explore the town’s maritime history at the Signal Point River Murray Interpretive Centre, or enjoy the local food and wine scene. 

Goolwa is also a popular base for exploring the nearby Coorong National Park, home to a diverse range of wildlife and stunning natural scenery. It is a quaint and picturesque town that offers visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Urimbirra Wildlife Park

The park is located in the Fleurieu Peninsula region, near the town of Victor Harbor, and covers an area of approximately 16 acres. The park is home to a wide variety of native Australian animals, including kangaroos, koalas, wombats, emus, and many species of birds. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the park and interact with the animals, feeding and petting them under the supervision of park staff. 

The park also offers wildlife shows and guided tours, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of Australia’s unique wildlife. Urimbirra Wildlife Park is a popular family-friendly attraction that offers visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with Australia’s iconic wildlife in a safe and educational environment.
