Day Trips near Rome, Italy – Travel Tips

Rome, Italy is one of the most historic city in the world. Popular with tourists for its iconic landmarks like the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum and the Roman Forum; the city is often overcrowded during peak tourist season. A good alternative to visiting these popular attractions during such times are the historic towns north of Rome in the Lazio region. In this blog, we will discuss three such locations, all within an hour distance from Rome via train and car.

Most visitors arrive in Rome via air through Fiumicino International Airport (Airport Code: FCO) or Roma Termini, the main train station. The airport is located outside the city and has direct connection to Roma Termini via the metro and bus system. Several popular rental car chains like AVIS, SixT and Hertz also offer service at the airport. Due to the frequent traffic congestion within Rome it is recommended to rent a car from the airport when not traveling into the city.

In summary, to visit the historic towns in Northern Lazio – A) Rent a car from Rome Airport. Or, B) Take a local train connection from Roma Termini.

The historic town of Civita Castellana was the first stop on our trip. The town is approximately 45 mins drive north from Rome airport. There is ample parking across a scenic and historic amphitheater and roman bath ruin that also offers a gorgeous view of the hilltop church. A short few minutes walk from the parking area will take visitors to the heart of the town and the historic church, whose artifacts go back to the renaissance, upper and even lower middle ages!

About 20 mins drive from Civita Castellano through scenic rural landscape of Lazio takes us to Nepi. This town is famous for the 15th century Borgia castle at the center of the town. The town’s church is adjacent to an Etruscan temple that is older than the Roman Republic! Another impressive sight is the still standing Roman Aqueduct from 3rd century A.D.

We stayed in the picturesque town of Soriano nel Cimino for few days which is located on a hilltop, about 30 mins north of Nepi. The historic town has many historic buildings that dates back 15th and 16th century including a famous castle and church. We stayed at the Palazzo Catalani, a 16th century building with Renaissance style interior, which is now a converted Hilton resort.
