The Church of the Assumption

The church in the middle of Lake Bled is called the Church of the Assumption (Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja in Slovenian). It is a picturesque white church with a red-tiled roof that sits on a small island in the middle of Lake Bled.

The church has a long and fascinating history. It was first mentioned in written records in the 15th century, but it is believed to have been built much earlier, possibly in the 9th century. Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous renovations and restorations, with its current appearance largely the result of a major renovation in the 17th century.

Visitors to Lake Bled can reach the island and the church by traditional wooden boats called pletnas, which are operated by local boatmen. The pletnas are similar to gondolas and are propelled by the boatman using a single oar.

Once you reach the island, you can climb the 99 steps to the church, where you can admire the beautiful interior, including frescoes dating back to the 15th century. One of the most famous features of the church is its bell, which is said to grant wishes to those who ring it. Legend has it that if you ring the bell three times while making a wish, your wish will come true.

The Church of the Assumption is a unique and beautiful attraction that adds to the charm and allure of Lake Bled.
